Weekly Distribution Release Roundup for March 9-15

Time for our weekly distro release roundup. We have another slew of Ubuntu-based alpha releases and numerous other new distro releases.

March 9

  • Bluewhite64 Linux 12.2 LiveDVD Bluewhite64  is a 64-bit Linux distro that is based off of Slackware. They just released the LiveDVD version of their last 12.2 release. It contains nearly all the same packages as the 12.2 release, hit up the changelog for the full details.
  • Vyatta Community Edition 5.0.2 Vyatta is a Linux distro designed to provide routing, firewalling, VPN, IPS, and WAN load balancing services for your network. There’s quite a large list of changes so I’d recommend checking out the release notes PDF.

March 10

  • PC/OS 2009v2a PC/OS is a Linux distro based on Ubuntu, but it aims to be extremely user-friendly by having codecs for common music & movie formats included among other things. This is a maintenance rollup release that contains all of the package updates and security updates since PC/OS 2009v2.
  • Tiny Core Linux 1.2 Tiny Core is a small minimal Linux distro that is based on busybox, Tiny X, Fltk, and Jwm. This release has udev USB rules updates, removal of unused files, using mnttool for better device support and many other updates.

March 11

  • Mandriva Linux 2009 Spring RC1 The RC1 release of Mandriva 2009 Spring has KDE 4.2.1, GNOME 2.25.92, Xfce 4.6, X.org 1.6, OpenOffice.org 3.0.1, and qt 4.5.0. Full release notes here.
  • Parsix GNU/Linux 2.0r0-TEST-3 Parsix is a linux distro derived from KANOTIX and based on Debian and it is GNOME-centric. This release has a 2.6.26.8-based kernel, several bugfixes, and numerous package updates.
  • PCLinuxOS 2009.1 PCLinuxOS is a Linux distro designed to be a user-friendly Linux desktop solution. This release has kernel 2.6.26.8.tex3, KDE 3.5.10, Firefox 3.0.7, Open Office 3.0, and many many more.
  • Voltalinux 2.2 BETA Voltalinux is a Slackware-based distro that uses the pkgsrc package system from NetBSD. This release is based on Slackware 12.2 and pkgsrc-2008Q3 and has kernel 2.6.27.7. This release is intended for server only and the graphical front-end is ready.

March 12

  • Wolvix 2.0.0 beta1 Wolvix is a Slackware-based distro and uses the Xfce desktop environment. Wolvix strives to provide a balance between everyday computing tasks, creativity, work and enjoyment. This release contains kernel 2.6.27.9, Xfce 4.6.0, and numerous other software package updates.
  • Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) Alpha 6 The Ubuntu team has released another alpha for the upcoming 9.04 release. This alpha contains kernel 2.6.28-8.26 based on kernel 2.6.28.7,  ext4 fs support, X.org 1.6, and many other updates.  Fulle release notes here. Also, Xubuntu, Kubuntu, Mythbuntu, and Ubuntu Studio updated their 9.04 Alpha releases to match the new Ubuntu Alpha.
  • RedHat Enterprise 4.8 Beta RedHat’s new Enterprise Linux beta uses kernel 2.6.9-82.EL, has PAM-enabled krb5 utilities, encryption and security enhancements,  and many other bugfixes and feature enhancements.

March 14

  • Greenie 4i R3 Greenie Linux is a Swedish Ubuntu-based distro that also incorporates packages from GetDeb.net. This release replaces Kino with Avidemux,  drops Songbird, updates Pidgin to 2.5.5, and adds many other packages.
